Domestic Destinations Are Now Opening Up For Travel

We’ve all spent too much time at home. 2021 has been tough with the onset of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Lockdown fatigue has kicked in hard. We are craving the thrill of adventure, the satisfaction of packed bags and the luxury of new experiences. While most of the world is opening up, on account of increased vaccinations, Indians are still cooped up. But the only respite we have is domestic destinations are now opening up for travel.

With vaccination drives in full swing and people getting back in shape, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport (CSMIA) has already witnessed the return of the early travellers. While international travel still remains a distant dream, some Indian states have changed their regulations and no longer require travelers to undergo the RT-PCR test upon arrival at their borders. Here is a list of destinations that you can fly to via CSMIA to satiate the thirst for adventure:

The capital has been the centre of ancient rich history and a thriving present. Enjoy the fascinating glimpse into the past in Old Delhi, with its labyrinth of narrow lanes, old havelis, and colourful bazaars, while taking a tour of the extensive Metro network that connects all corners of Delhi. Delhi is a home to three World Heritage monuments—Qutub Minar, Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb that have survived many centuries, making it the fabulously photogenic corner of the city. Try Delhi’s famously delicious street food of Punjabi Kulchas, Chole Bhature or Dilli-ki-Chaat between your meetings.

Delhi is conducting random tests for passengers arriving from high-risk cities.

Andhra Pradesh

At the rate we are going with the pandemic, all that is left to do is pray. Andhra Pradesh has the iconic Tirupati Balaji, alternatively known as the lord Venkatesa temple, at the foot of Tirumala hills that has attracted travellers from across the world. Cave tourism is slowly picking up in Andhra, for those so inclined.

The new state has architectural wonders like the Charminar or the grandeur of the Golconda Fort. Known for its food, Telangana offers culinary delights such as the Hyderabadi Biryani, Golichina Mamsam, Sarva Pindi, and Sakinalu. If food is not what makes you take a flight, then the local flea markets might. From Hyderabadi pearls to the kalamkari fabric the historic trades come to life on the streets of the old city.

The charm of Karnataka lies in the diversity of this cosmopolitan centre. Home to the IT hub of South Asia, Karnataka is in equal parts earthy and modern. Bangalore is a progressive cybercity; heading out of town you’ll encounter the evergreen rolling hills of Coorg and the ancient remains of the Vijayanagara empire is one of the many facets of this dynamic state. The popular hill stations of Chikmagalur are a small window into what the Western Ghats are like and the varied wildlife can be experienced on a wildlife safari. Hopefully, sightings of Bengal tigers, elephants, sloth bears, leopards, or reptiles and birds will have you captivated. The coastline around Gokarna has beautiful coves and empty sands.

A favourite among the wildlife enthusiasts, Gujarat, has continued to retain the position of one most exciting destinations to visit for those seeking the most thrilling nature safari experience. The Asiatic Lions are not the only royalty that the state prides itself on, the cities of Vadodara and Rajkot, which have now opened up for travellers without the RT-PCR test, are an extension of the same royal opulence. Rajkot among the top 10 cleanest cities of the country was also home to the early life of Mahatma Gandhi whose belongings can be viewed at the Kaba Gandhi No Delo, the childhood house of the leader. The palace city of Vadodara also houses the Maratha royal Gaekwad dynasty.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is a land of cultural and religious heritage that offers history and beauty. Famed for its Dravidian-style Hindu temples, Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple – high ‘gopuram’ towers ornamented with colourful figures is one of the most famous places to visit. When the heat of Tamil temple towns overwhelms, escape to the tip of India – Kanyakumari or the beautiful hill station of Ooty or to the splendid mansions sprinkled across Chettinad.

Please note that if you are travelling to Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, an RT-PCR report not earlier than 72 hours before departure may be required.
