India’s Covishield Approved By Nine EU Countries

The Covishield, AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute Of India (SII) is now eligible for travel to Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Greece, Ireland and Spain, Iceland, Switzerland, and Estonia. This notice comes amidst news that the EU will not permit Covishield on its approved list for travel.

Estonia has confirmed that it will recognise both Covishield and Covaccine authorised by the Indian Government for travel. India would not recognise an EU vaccine pass for travellers unless the union does the same for India’s own vaccine certificate, sources said.

Covishield is the Indian-made version of AstraZeneca’s Vaxzevria jab, which has been authorised in the European Union.

The vaccines currently eligible for the green pass have all been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Meanwhile, SII has submitted an application to the EMA for the approval of green pass expecting the clearance in a month.

Covishield was listed for emergency use by the WHO in February. Covaxin is yet to be cleared by the WHO and it is expected that EMA will accept it after the approval.
