The Maldives has barred travellers from a number of South Asian countries including India in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.
An official statement from the Health Protection Agency of Maldives said that starting from May 13 tourist visas for tourists travelling from South Asian countries will be temporarily halted.
The island nation in the Indian Ocean saw an increase of 1500 covid cases on Tuesday (11 May) as compared to 100 last month.
The destination that had one of the most successful vaccine roll-outs became the go-to destination for Bollywood stars from India.
As per the Maldives, South Asian countries include Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. However, there is no clarity at the moment about how long this ban will be for.
