Planting Ideas

Designer Shalini Subramanian talks about what makes Plantation House work across contours of seasons and styles.
Plantation House is an unconventional place for art events (especially music),  tell us about the inception of the idea?
The idea is to create an informal platform for inspired experiments, performances and exhibitions in the world of fashion, textile, art, sound and music. To weave eclectic talents and tastes of artists, musicians and aficionados into a series of curated evenings held within the space.

How would you describe the acoustics of the Plantation House in regard to a music event?
I intend to keep the sound personal and each session as it would be if one were to walk into an artiste’s studio and see/listen to the artiste’s work-in-progress.

Tell us something about the coinage of the name- Plantation House.
Plantation House is not the era, colonial / imperial in any sense. It is not the East India Company. It however celebrates an attitude of leisure –non hedonistic, more personal and spiritual. A sense of pace, time and quality, heavily folk inspired but thoroughly modern, contemporary and definitely not ethnic. Plantation House has been fashioned with values that work across contours of seasons and styles. The products strive to achieve a simplicity that can be woven into lives with ease and elegance.
