Way I Travel

Sumit Kumar, General Manager,  Hyatt Place Hampi

  1. Where do you live?

I live in the lush green township of Vidyanagar which is where my hotel is also situated. We are strategically located in between Hospet and Bellary.

What do you like the most about travelling?

Being from the F&B background, I am a typical foodie and travelling to several parts of country and even internationally certainly increases my awareness of different cuisines. I am also a firm believer that travelling is the best form of education and you certainly learn more and more when you see from your own eyes.

What are your travel pet peeves?

I get really upset when my travel itinerary gets disturbed. Being in charge of a hotel operation I am unable to take long vacations hence delay in flight, loosing connection absolutely irritates me and even more as I just can’t do anything about it.

Which airline do you prefer travelling by?

I love Indigo domestically and Etihad when I fly international. Both these airline have one thing in common that they not only give you comfort but also personalise your travel experience.

Which is your favorite holiday destination?

After I was transferred to Hampi I realised that Karnataka has so much to offer and for sure in the coming days I would be exploring the Wildlife and Heritage side of the state. Internationally I travelled to Turkey in the year 2009 for just few days and just loved absolutely everything about the place. I think that place is so rich with culture, cuisine and hospitality that just few days was not enough for me and I would like to travel back again.

Which is your favorite business destination?

Bangalore has always and will always be my favourite business destination. I think that infrastructure wise the city has enough to offer and the buggiest plus is the helpfulness of people in that city is always talked about.

What do you always carry in your cabin luggage?

I am a big fan of Apple…no no not the fruit but the gadget brand, so I always carry my i pad as it works really handy to receive and share information. Over the period of time I have gathered a good collection of books on Hampi. I ensure that I have 2-3 copies to share with someone whom I meet who is really interested in this “World heritage site” which has so much to offer and unfortunately not many domestic travellers are very well aware about it.

 Describe your gadget arsenal?

Like I mentioned earlier my ipad & ipod. Not to forget my phone and its charger. I also have a very tiny speaker that connects very comfortably to all my devises and whenever I feel like listening to some music it comes very handy.

Which is your preferred luggage brand?

I have always been using Giodano. They are not too much in producing “carry cases” but I really adore the quality that they produce.

What’s playing on your iPod?

Lately I have developed a taste of Jazz and am trying to increase my knowledge and understanding of it.

What are you currently reading?

Like I had mentioned earlier that I have collected books on Hampi and now I have started reading of other heritage sites like Pattadakal, Badami , Aihole. It’s really great to explore so much more about our own country and I must add that Karnataka is really “one state many worlds”.
