Avoid carrying valuables in your check-in luggage
Things are known to get lost during baggage handling. It’s just wiser to carry valuables, if you absolutely must, in your carry on luggage. Same goes for important documents or cash.
Carry essentials on the plane with you
There are some items that you simply can’t do without while you are travelling. Your cellphone, wallet, battery chargers, a change of clothes and medication are few of those items — so carry them with you. In case your luggage is lost, you should be able to get by without running to the store in the dead of the night. Pack your carry on luggage keeping those things in mind.
Roll. Don’t fold
Save on space and avoid wrinkles by rolling your clothes rather than folding them. Fold shirts, pants, and skirts in half vertically, and then roll them up tightly.
Choose a neutral colour
This rule is applicable more for women than men. Most clothes go with blacks and browns and they also work in the corporate environment. You can mix-and-match accordingly. Men must always a carry a white shirt as it works for all occasions. If the number of clothing items are as many as the days you spend on the road, then you have packed one too many. If you repeat a shirt or a top, once in four days, and match it with a different trouser or skirt, no one will report you to the fashion police.
Leave some empty space
If you are the kind of person who always brings a memento home from your trip, you should always save room in your luggage. If closing your suitcase is a hardship, then you have over packed. Consider packing a small cloth bag in your luggage, if you love to shop.
Have your toiletry bag always packed
All hotels now offer the basic amenities as far as toiletry is concerned. But if you are particular about the brand or the products you use, remember to buy miniatures of all your necessities and put them in your toilet kit. That way you will not miss out on anything when you are in a rush to leave for the airport. If it helps, put a list of products you carry with you in the bag, so when you run out of something you can always buy a refill.
You do not want to go to a meeting with a severe migrane because you forgot to pack your medicines and it’s too late to run to the store. You and your doctor knows your health issues best and it’s better to take precautions than be sorry later. It’s a good idea to consult the doctor before you pack medicines for your trip.
