AAI to Set Up R&D Centre in Begumpet Airport

According to news reports, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has tied up with US-based technology provider, MITRE Corporation, to set up a high-tech research, development and training facility in Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad, which is no longer used for commercial operations. “The facility would be used to train Air Traffic Controllers (ATC). It is also proposed to set up simulators for training purposes,” a senior AAI official was quoted as saying in a Hindustan Times report.

A number of airports in the USA and Europe, which are no longer in active use, have been turned into Research & Development (R&D) centres providing training in air traffic management. AAI would get the latest state of the art ‘Human-in-the-Loop’ computer simulation capability—a virtual, real-time ATC simulation to manage air traffic.
