Starwood Hotels and Resorts to expand in Tier-II cities in India

starwoodAccording to news reports, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, has identified the Tier-II markets and micro markets in India for its upscale brands such as Aloft, Four Points and Elements.

“We believe in the opportunities that lie in tier-II markets and in micro markets within large metros as cities evolve and grow. Our upscale brands — Aloft, Four Points by Sheraton and Element — are perfectly positioned to play in this space”, said, Brian McGuinness, Senior Vice President, Specialty Select Brands, Starwood Hotels, according to a report in Financial Chronicle.

The company at present has Four Points properties in Navi Mumbai, Jaipur, Pune, Vizag and Ahmedabad. It also has properties under Aloft brand in Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Chandigarh and Ahmedabad. Three additional Four Points is on the anvil in Faridabad, Gurgaon and Mumbai and two more under Aloft brand is coming up in Bangalore and New Delhi, according to McGuinnness.

However, the biggest challenge for international hotel operators in India, according to McGuiness, is the slow pace of development due to regulatory procedures and lack of infrastructure. To overcome that, the company is converting existing hotels, the report further stated.

“Conversions will help Starwood meet demand from partners and developers to bring more properties online.Adaptive reuse projects are also a sustainable way to expand. Existing office buildings with high ceilings provide an opportunity to do this,” McGuinness added.
