According to news reports, while making its debut at the OneWorld Travel Mart (OTM) 2013’s Mumbai (February 8-10) and Delhi (February 14-16) editions, Zambia is all set to establish itself in the Indian market. Mato Shimabale, Director of Marketing, Zambia Tourism Board, said, “India is a very important market with great potential as it is among the top ten in terms of arrivals. Over the past years, we have seen many Indian travellers coming into Zambia, and hence we want to further grow our relationship with India. Zambia has many tourist attractions, the greatest of them being the famous Victoria Falls. Being one of the seven wonders of the world, this World Heritage Site is a phenomenal spectacle and draws huge numbers of tourists annually. We also have fantastic scenic landscapes, 20 national parks, safaris, varieties of Adventure Tourism activities like upsailing, bungee jumping, game parks and our famous walk with the lion nature trails, a low crime rate and a thriving nightlife.”
One of the safest African countries, Zambia mainly attracts leisure travellers owing to its wide scope of offerings and is now looking at attracting Meetings, Incentives, Conferences/Conventions, Exhibitions (MICE). “As Zambia is hosting the 20th edition of the UN General Assembly of the WTO (World Tourism Organisation) on the Victoria Falls , we are looking at hosting more than 1,000 delegates, thus making Zambia a MICE hub”, said Shimabale.
Working in tandem with the Indian travel trade, Zambia is actively participating in roadshows and trade fairs, organising workshops and conducting FAM trips for tour operators to throw light on its array of offerings. Commenting on the increase in Indian arrivals, Shimabale said, “We have seen a ten per cent increase every year, and hence we are looking at promoting Zambia in India on an extensive level by tapping metros as well as Tier-II cities. Zambia houses a huge Indian community, thus making it easier to tap the Indian market. The Indian economy is growing at a rapid pace and there is a huge emergence of the middle class demanding unique destinations. Zambia is the perfect destination for the perfect mix of business and pleasure.”
